Pet writing hate: A lot vs. Alot

Well after a great response to my writing pet hate last week with a lot of other suggestions to do I thought I’d tackle this one this week. This drives me inwardly crazy every time I see it. A lot is two separate words - spell it as one and you’re just plain wrong. Stare at Alot for too long and it starts to sound like a Biblical character. Spelt like this: ‘Allot’ actually means to grant or distribute something to a person or persons...

‘Fess up if you’ve done this and then never do it again. Now repeat after me: Two is not a lot...

 

Pet writing hate: Now vs. Know

Blame it on predictive text if you like, but the more I get given to read, the more this little difference kicks up and seems to make a fuss. Just in case you’ve seen the headline and are sneakily wondering what the difference is, apart from the added ‘k’, here it is for you...

‘Now’ is something that needs to be actioned immediately. Part reminiscent of when your mother used to yell at you: “Clean your room now!”

‘Know’ is all about knowledge. “Do you know what time the performance begins later?”

Remember knowledge begins with a ‘k’ and then shorten it to ‘know’. If you can’t remember that knowledge has a ‘k’ then you can at least bask in the irony of it all before reading this post again...
